There is time (and slow-time) aplenty to place the powerlines and water pumps required to make it all function - to build a city in Skylines is to gently lose yourself in an unhurried world. The core Skylines experience is instead calmly 'painting' districts, pipes and roads, the land a canvas for what most pleases your eye. But Skylines has a particularly tranquil and forgiving take on mayoral simulation - you really, really have to work at it to make a catastrophic error, and even if you do, new citizens will cheerfully stroll back in en masse once you've cleared the mess away. Some city-building games, as this is, can be fairly exacting affairs - the constant terror of running out of money or being unable to prevent an entire suburb from burning down does not exactly promote relaxation.

Most of all though, it's the sound and feel of the wind roaring around you that makes this sing: that sense of being in another place, free as a bird. I'm chasing a certain feel rather than a certain category. I crave an altogether more sedate beginning to 2018, and so my mind turns to games in which violence, reflex or any other kind of unblinking attentiveness takes a back seat. The soundtrack is cheerful but unmemorable.My nerves have been sufficiently jangled and my trigger-finger sufficiently itched by the glut of action games which landed in the closing months of last year. The gameplay is simple and the different math challenges are given enough mechanical variety that they don't get repetitive. It isn't up to most AAA titles of course - and it's showing its age a little - but it's still an appealing environment for younger players.
The characters are charmingly cartoony and the environment is detailed and well-designed. Timez Attack by contrast is a pretty lavish production certainly by educational-game standards. Most educational games are pretty bare-bones affairs just math exercises without any real gameplay to sweeten the pill. Everything from unlocking doors to boss fights is powered by mastering multiplication. Along the way they'll need to quickly solve multiplication puzzles of increasing difficulty in order to keep going. It's a cartoony third-person 3D adventure game that calls on students to guide its green bug/dinosaur of a hero or heroine through a dangerous fantasy world.
